THE MOTHERS MYLK

Can you believe, in modern Western Cultures postpartum practices beyond the first few days following birth don't exist!? Outdated social norms have many mothers feeling an overwhelming pressure to “bounce back” quickly and adapt to motherhood like it’s a walk in the park - all without any additional organised support. As Mamas, our co-founders Shannon and Alana experienced the lack of postpartum support firsthand.

Mothers Mylk was founded with a vital mission: To nourish, educate and support women through their motherhood journey; reducing or eliminating the need for clinical intervention before it becomes critical. Statistics show that up to 1 in 5 new Mums WILL experience perinatal depression and/or anxiety. That’s around 60,000 Australian mothers each year! A sad but real statistic facing Australian women in the year following the birth of their baby. Source: panda.org.au.

Our vision is to increase positive postpartum experiences for the modern-day mum. Since 2021, Mothers Mylk has grown into a powerful 100% online community supporting mamas who are feeling overwhelmed and chronically fatigued, and debunking the notion that this is a ‘normal’ part of motherhood.

You can now enter motherhood empowered with the knowledge and tools to support your health. From memberships, courses, books and our online Mothers Mylk Clinic – there are many ways to join us and be empowered. We look forward to welcoming you to the Mothers Mylk community.

My Journey

My personal experience with postpartum depletion and postpartum depression is how Mothers Mylk came about. I am here to share with you my story to support and empower women and change the way we do postpartum in our culture.

As a first time Mum, we don't know what we don't know, until we go through it. Up to 1 in 5 mothers will experience postpartum depression and we hear of far too many mothers wishing they had done things differently the first time around and hoping for a better experience the next time around.

My postpartum journey after the birth of my first son is a perfect example of how no new mother should experience their fourth trimester. My postpartum care involved nothing more than a short 10-minute appointment with a GP where I was assured that the symptoms I was experiencing were all “normal” because “I had just had a baby”. I was depleted after birth, overwhelmed, chronically fatigued, lonely, sad, angry and unable to enjoy the magic of motherhood.

This led me down a very dark path. I eventually checked myself into hospital and was placed under the care of a perinatal mental health nurse (who saved my life!). I thought I was going crazy, but I wasn't, we discovered I had a dangerously high thyroid level along with nutritional deficiencies, which were all contributing to my depression, outrages, moods, postpartum rage, and inability to cope with the smallest of tasks.

Whilst not normal, my story is certainly not uncommon. This needs to change for mothers, and with the right education, tools and care it can! Mothers CAN thrive postpartum and enjoy this magical time.

My Experience

Hello, I’m Alana. I am a degree-qualified naturopath who specialises in women’s health. For those who are new to the term, naturopathy is a model of natural medicine taking a holistic look at health.

My clinical experience has shown me that throughout their pregnancy many women do not have the support they need to set them up to thrive after the birth of their little one. Additionally, I see all too often postpartum care focusing solely on the baby whilst the new mother’s health needs are brushed over.

In clinic, I support many women throughout their pregnancy and postpartum period to ensure they are meeting the nutrition requirements they need to nourish their bodies in simple and effective ways. In the lead up to birth, I use simple pathology testing to identify certain foods and nutrients that will be required, and I set up a respective post-birth plan for the new mum. I have found that when my clients follow their post-birth plan there are much lower incidences of postpartum depletion and an easier transition into motherhood occurs.

Through Mothers Mylk I combine my passion for cooking and postpartum health into one! My mission is to share all the knowledge I have from my degree, clinical experience and personal experience with all mothers and mothers to be, and ensure they have easy access to the support they deserve postpartum.

I gave birth to my first baby in August 2021 and can confidently say that putting a postpartum care plan into place has helped my physical, emotional and mental recovery, as well as the transition into motherhood. I can see how easy it is to get caught up caring for our little ones and to forget about caring for ourselves. First and foremost, preparation is always key when it comes to looking after our health!
