Australia’s long-forgotten epidemic – "Prayers answered" for Postpartum Depression survivors

"Aussie Naturopath tackles the neglected ‘fourth trimester’ of pregnancy to raving national success."

  • 1 in 5 mothers will experience perinatal depression &/or anxiety.
  • 50% of mothers will experience some level of postpartum depletion.
  • 10 years is how long postpartum depletion can last if left untreated.

Motherhood is challenging on the best of days, however motherhood whilst chronically fatigued is a recipe for disaster!

Statistics show that 1 in 5 new mums will experience perinatal depression and/or anxiety. That’s around 60,000 Australian mothers each year! A sad but real statistic facing Australian women in the year following the birth of their baby. Source: beyondblue.org.au.

It’s hard to believe that in modern Western cultures, postpartum practices beyond the first few days following birth do not exist! Outdated social norms have many mothers feeling an overwhelming pressure to ‘bounce back’ quickly and adapt to motherhood like it’s a walk in the park – all without any additional organised support.

“We are now seeing many mothers feeling overwhelmed and chronically fatigued postpartum and mamas are far too often reassured that this is a completely normal part of motherhood” says Alana Mulhall, Mama, degree-qualified Naturopath and Mothers Mylk co-founder.

“Nourishment and structured care for mothers post-birth is essential in preventing conditions such as postpartum depletion or postpartum depression. It also aids in rebuilding the vast amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients lost during pregnancy, birth and whilst breastfeeding.” After becoming a statistic, Mama of two, Postpartum Doula and Mothers Mylk co-founder Shannon Hayes knew there had to be a better way.

Your journey to a healthy postpartum recovery starts here.

“Lacking the knowledge I needed to thrive as a new mother, I became physically depleted and mentally exhausted. I thought preparing a birth plan, completing a hypno-birthing course and fully equipping the nursery was all I needed to nail motherhood. They neglected to mention what to expect postpartum!” Shannon explains.

“My drive to support women in their postpartum journey began with the vision that no Mama would have to experience what I went through. It was unsettling to see the gap that healthcare provided for new mothers! Your journey doesn’t end after birth, it’s only just beginning. I know more than ever that educating ourselves about our optimal health is the first step to thriving as a mother.”

Thanks to the Mothers Mylk platform, Australian Mama’s can now enter motherhood empowered with the knowledge and tools to support their postpartum health. Since 2021, the Mothers Mylk team have been educating their like-minded community on the basics of nutrition, how to use food as medicine to treat common postpartum concerns, unpacking what to expect from hormones post-birth, and sharing the good, the bad and the ugly that comes in the magical fourth trimester.

The recently launched postpartum survival guide titled ‘Nourished Postpartum’ is already changing lives for Australian Mamas. Curated to provide holistic support with educational, nourishing and empowering tools that are essential for mamas to thrive post-birth. Mothers Mylk also designed 60 nourishing, no-fuss recipes, including plenty of one-handed snacks, freezer favourites and warming meals that are loaded with nourishment for the weeks post-birth.

“Very informative yet easy to read! The food [in Nourished Postpartum] is the best part ;) In all honesty, this book is a game-changer. They got it right when they said “post-partum toolkit!” exclaims Rene from Queensland.
